Acid Handling (Health and Safety Risks)

Problem Summary

The use of sulfuric acid to regulate pH is a common mill practice.  Harmful by inhalation, ingestion, and through skin contact, sulfuric acid poses serious health and safety risks to mill personnel.  Direct skin contact can lead to extensive and severe burns and frequent inhalation can result in respiratory tract irritation and possibly cancer.  Even diluted concentrations of sulfuric acid can irritate the skin and can cause scarring of the face and eyelids and irreparable damage to the cornea.

Recommended Solution

Hercules' Infinity® pH Control Technology provides efficient pH control while significantly reducing the health and safety risks associated with sulfuric acid.  The product, which is an organic salt of sulfuric acid, has the equivalent strength of 50% sulfuric acid but is significantly less corrosive.  Infinity® pH Control Technology is non-fuming, FDA approved, and non-hazardous (as defined by OSHA).

Key benefits realized from practical application of Infinity® pH Control Technology include:

Efficient pH control
Reduced corrosion
Reduced health and safety risks
