Boiler Failures Due to Water-Side Deposition

Problem Summary

Water-side deposits in boiler tubes can cause failures due to either tube-metal over-heat or under-deposit corrosion.  Deposits cause the tube metal temperature to increase leading to metal deformation and ultimately over-heat failure.  Corrosion failures may also occur due to the under-deposit corrosion mechanism that may occur when deposits are present.

Iron represents the primary contaminant in paper mill boiler systems (especially those systems operating on demineralized quality make-up).  The control of iron deposition is managed through a combination of minimizing the contaminant loading to the boiler and dispersing the iron that does reach the boiler.  The control of contaminant loading to the boiler is achieved through:

Condensate corrosion control
Condensate polishing
Feedwater pH control
Condensate dumping programs

The dispersing of the iron that does reach the boiler is achieved through the use of dispersants.  The use of polymeric dispersants for boiler deposition control has a long history, however many polymers lose their efficacy as pressure increases.  The control of iron deposition in paper mill boilers is critical to the reliable operation of the boilers.

Recommended Solution

OptiSperse™ HTP Boiler Dispersant Technology represents a major breakthrough in iron deposition control for higher pressure boilers and remains un-matched in the industry.  This new polymeric dispersant is an organic molecule designed specifically for iron control.  OptiSperse HTP provides superior iron transport that can be measured through iron transport studies, deposit weight density measurement on boiler tubes, and overall boiler cleanliness evident upon inspection.

Key benefits recorded from practical applications of OptiSperse™ HTP Boiler Dispersant Technology include:

Improved iron transport through the boiler
Cleaner boilers
Increased time between acid cleanings
Reduced risk of tube overheat failures
Reduced risk of under-deposit corrosion
Improved boiler reliability
