SoyadŽ Case Histories Commercial applications confirm that Soyad® adhesive systems are cost-competitive, environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditional wood adhesives. The following case histories highlight some of the key benefits that Soyad® adhesives offer manufacturers of interior wood products. Case History 1 -- Plywood Manufacturer Significantly Reduces Formaldehyde Emissions By Switching to Soyad® Adhesive A North American decorative hardwood plywood manufacturer wanted to reduce the formaldehyde emissions of its panels to a level meeting CARB Phase 2 emission standards. Ashland recommended that the manufacturer replace its existing urea formaldehyde-based adhesive system with a Soyad® adhesive system. Upon converting to the Soyad® adhesive, formaldehyde emissions were reduced to meet CARB 2 standards, which allowed the panels to qualify for LEED® points. Case History 2 -- Engineered Wood Flooring Manufacturer Exceeds Trial Objectives with Soyad® System A leading North American manufacturer of engineered wood flooring products trialed a Soyad® adhesive as a possible replacement for its urea formaldehyde-based adhesive system. In addition to significantly reducing formaldehyde emissions, which was the manufacturer’s primary objective, the Soyad® adhesive proved to be cost competitive to the existing system as well as several previously trialed low-emitting systems. Having exceeded the trial objectives, the Soyad® system is being evaluated commercially by the manufacturer. Case History 3 -- Soyad® Adhesive Allows Particleboard Manufacturer to Eliminate Formaldehyde From Its Boards To comply with new formaldehyde emissions standards, a North American particleboard manufacturer replaced its existing urea formaldehyde-based adhesive system with a Soyad® adhesive system from Ashland. Because Soyad® adhesives contains no formaldehyde, it use has allowed the manufacturer to reduce formaldehyde from its press and the makeup of its boards. In fact, the boards far exceed CARB Phase 2 emission standards, U.S. Federal HUD emission standards, and European E-1 emission standards, making them particularly well-suited for homes, schools, hospitals, and institutions nationwide.
