Inconsistent and/or Inefficient Size Emulsification and Feed

Problem Summary

Continuous addition of sizing additives is essential to providing the functionality of the specific paper or board being produced.   Furthermore, the consistency and quality of these additives must be exacting to ensure uniform finished product properties as expected by the end user.   Inconsistent or excessive variation in the addition rate of sizing chemicals to a paper machine can lead to customer complaints and rejected product.   Inconsistent quality of the emulsion size can also lead to off spec paper production.

On-site emulsified size products such as ASA have the greatest chance of experiencing these kinds of problems because the sizing emulsion has to be prepared on site and then metered in a controlled manner to the paper machine.  Other internal sizing products such as AKD and rosin size emulsions are delivered in a ready-to-use emulsion form.  Consistent product quality and consistent feed is easier to achieve with these pre-made emulsions.  However, papermakers should not have to consider product make down and feed issues when selecting the best sizing solution for their operation.

Recommended Solution

To ensure production of an excellent size emulsion, Hercules developed the Hercules Alkaline Size Emulsification (HASE) Systems.  The newest model is the HASE 300-75.  This state-of -the-art equipment produces a high quality size emulsion with minimal variability in emulsion particle size distribution.

The HASE 300-75 is an exclusive design with a flexible, programmable logic controller (PLC) and a BURKS1 regenerative type stainless steel turbine pump. Pump wear rate is dramatically reduced with this longer lasting metallurgy.  This not only increases pump operating life but contributes to reduced variability of the emulsion quality since impeller adjustment is not frequently needed.  The result is on-target sizing performance.

The HASE 300-75 is currently available in North America.

Typical benefits associated with the Hercules Alkaline Size Emulsification (HASE) Systems (HASE) :

Industrial quality components for reliable equipment operation - designed to operate 24/7
Consistent size emulsion quality ensures sizing performance
DCS connectivity provides operators with continuous equipment operating condition
Automatic dosage adjustment correlates with paper machine production to maintain constant sizing dosage
Spare HASE unit installation provides full redundancy in the event of an equipment component failure
