Poor filler retention and distribution Problem Summary Poor filler retention can cause sheet quality and productivity problems on the machine. Uneven distribution of filler results in both two-sidedness and poor optical properties that can negatively impact sheet quality. Wet end cleanliness (relating to defects) and additive efficiency are some of the most glaring productivity issues. Papermakers have historically relied on retention aids to address these and other problems related to filler retention. Older, more traditional technologies such as anionic and cationic flocculants provide retention but have some limitations. Newer alternatives include inorganic microparticles and organic micropolymers.
